A Dietitian’s Perspective on Nutrition Supplements

“Why did you become a dietitian?”  We have all been in that team building meeting or even a college class where this question has come up.  My answer is nutrition supplements.  Well, that is the short answer anyways.  The long answer is boring and still ends with nutrition supplements.

I grew up a Flintstone Kid (purple Barney was my favorite).  As a kid, I did not put too much thought into vitamins, I just took them so I could grow big and strong.  The therapeutic aspect of supplements was introduced to me in my early twenties, leading me to choose Nutrition as a college major.

After college, I began my dietetic career as a Renal Dietitian and loved 13 years working in dialysis.  One evening, my husband and I were talking about what we wanted to do before we went to college and I told him of my dreams of owning a health food store.

We made it happen!  It was an amazing experience, but a brick and mortar small business was hard to maintain during the Covid Era, so I returned to dialysis- my other love in nutrition.

I learned a lot in the time I had a health food store:

  • I had customers come to me because I was a Registered Dietitian.  They valued my knowledge and expertise.
  • Nutrition Supplement information is everywhere.  It is on the internet, TV, the checkout line at the grocery store, random conversations with your neighbor’s cousin’s best friend.
  • As a dietitian, I prefer to provide information to clients and patients that is factual.  As in researched based.
  • There are so many supplements out there.  And it is hard to always find the answer you need for the plethora of product available.

The last point leads me to why I have started this blog/website.  I want to be the resource that I needed.  My aim is to provide researched backed information on various supplements- from ads I see on the internet and TV, casual conversations I have with others, and requests from you who read this.

I am so excited to continue my journey with nutrition supplements!
